Vilar Performing Arts Center ABOUT MARTIN SEXTON:
"Martin Sexton is ripe with raw, expansive talent. His voice comes in a hundred impossible shades. His songs are sweet and spirited and soulful. His repertoire is like a cross-country tour of the American musical vernacular." —Boston Globe
A native of Syracuse, New York, Sexton grew up in the 80's, uninterested in the sounds of the day, and fueled his dreams on the timeless sounds of classic rock and roll. He eventually migrated to Boston, where he began to build his following singing on the streets of Harvard Square and gradually working his way through the scene.
The New York Times wrote that this artist "jumps beyond standard fare on the strength of his voice, a blue-eyed soul man's supple instrument," adding that "his unpretentious heartiness helps him focus on every soul singer's goal: to amplify the sound of the ordinary heart."
His latest studio release, Sugarcoating, finds this one-of-a-kind-troubadour doing what he does best: locating larger truths within the specific details of the life he's living.
Tickets are $30 and available online or by calling the VPAC box office at 1.888.920.ARTS

Vilar Performing Arts Center ABOUT SAN JOSE TAIKO:
San Jose Taiko has mesmerized audiences and critics with the powerful, spellbinding and propulsive sounds of the taiko drums for three decades. Inspired by traditional Japanese drumming, the performers express the beauty and harmony of the human spirit through the voice of the taiko as they strive to create new dimensions in movement and music.
San Jose Taiko has taken the essence and voice of the traditional taiko and infused it with the vitality and freshness of their American spirit, creating a dynamic and compelling new Asian American art form. The artists use the power and beauty of taiko to transcend cultural barriers and foster a greater understanding of the Japanese American culture. Taiko is so deeply a part of the traditions of the Japanese and the Shinto and Buddhist religions that it is considered to be both the essence and the heartbeat of the Japanese spirit.
The company’s performances are appropriate for all grade levels and focuses on the history of taiko and its links to Japan and to the local Japanese American communities. The 45 minute school program presents the company’s basic philosophical principles and engages the students to actively participate in its high-action demonstration.
