ABOUT "OPEN WINGS, BROKEN STRINGS":
An acoustic tour featuring three tremendously talented musicians:
Eddie Kowalczyk of LIVE
Art Alexakis of Everclear
Leigh Nash of Six Pence None The Richer
“As a songwriter and a singer in a successful rock band, I have had the good fortune of being surrounded by incredible musicians, lots of wonderful production on both record and onstage and plenty of VOLUME! But did you know that the story of your favorite songs often originates in a much different environment? Open Wings, Broken Strings is an opportunity for you to get to the heart of your favorite artists and their songs in a unique and compelling way. Stripped down, intimate and acoustic, you’ll hear the strings on the guitar vibrate and buzz, the vocal chords hum and pulsate as the songs you love come to life like you never knew they could. In this intimate environment, the rockstar steps out from behind the layers of decibel and drama to greet you with the essence, the story, and the song. Quiet, just might be the new loud.”
- Eddie Kowalczyk of LIVE
SHOWTIME:
7:30pm
TICKETS:
Tickets are $58 and are available online at Vilar Performing Arts Center, by phone at 888.920.ARTS(2787), or in person at the VPAC Box Office in Beaver Creek.

ABOUT "A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD":
A hit on Broadway, “A Year with Frog and Toad” was nominated for 3 Tony® Awards – including Best Musical.
In its third year of national touring, this all-new production comes to the VPAC stage! Arnold Lobel's beloved characters hop from the page to the stage in Robert and Willie Reale's musical adaptation of “A Year With Frog and Toad.” Developed by Mr. Lobel's daughter, Adrianne Lobel, the stage musical remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the spring, to the planting of gardens, the friends swim, rake leaves and go sledding. All the while they’re learning life lessons, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special.

ABOUT "LA TRAVIATA":
The last of the three great operas of Giuseppe Verdi's middle period, “La Traviata” is now one of his most popular works. Written for the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, it was first heard on March 6, 1853. The libretto, by Francesco Maria Piave, details the ill-fated love affair between a young gentleman named Alfredo Germont and a terminally ill courtesan named Violetta. It is based on the novel “La dame aux Camélias” by Alexandre Dumas, published in 1848. The title "La Traviata" means literally The Woman Who Strayed, or perhaps more figuratively, The Fallen Woman.
Verdi's use of traditional forms in combination with a new dramatic conviction would lead to the more dramatic style of his later operas. This delicate blend of old and new styles is perhaps what has kept “La Traviata” ever fresh and appealing in modern opera houses.
ABOUT TEATRO LIRICO D'EUROPA:
Teatro Lirico D’Europa was born in 1988, the brainchild of former ballet star Yves Josse and opera singer Giorgio Lalov. They toured Europe for 7 years to great critical success, later setting their sights on touring the company in America. Winter 2000 saw the first major American tour, and the company has been thrilling audiences from Boston to Beaver Creek ever since. Past VPAC appearances include “La Traviata,” “La Bohème,” “Carmen,” “Tosca” and “Aida.”

ABOUT "DIE FLEDERMAUS":
Johann Strauss's witty, melodious and charmingly frivolous comedy revolves around practical jokes, faked identities, long-deliberated revenge and the power of champagne. The singing is idiomatic, the spirit infectiously jovial, the acting polished and witty. It’s an evening of fun for the most schooled opera lover, as well as those new to the art form.

ABOUT THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL ORCHESTRA:
The Russian National Orchestra (RNO) has been in demand throughout the music world ever since its 1990 Moscow premiere. Of the orchestra's 1996 debut at the BBC Proms in London, the Evening Standard wrote, "they played with such captivating beauty that the audience gave an involuntary sigh of pleasure." More recently, they were described as "a living symbol of the best in Russian art" (Miami Herald).
ABOUT YUJA WANG:
Twenty-two year old Chinese pianist Yuja Wang is widely recognized for playing that combines the spontaneity and fearless imagination of youth with the discipline and precision of a mature artist. Regularly lauded for her controlled, prodigious technique, Yuja’s command of the piano has been described as “astounding” and “superhuman,” and she has been praised for her authority over the most complex technical demands of the repertoire, the depth of her musical insight, as well as her fresh interpretations and graceful, charismatic stage presence. This past season The Washington Post called her Kennedy Center recital debut “jaw-dropping” and following her San Francisco recital debut The San Francisco Chronicle wrote “The arrival of Chinese-born pianist Yuja Wang on the musical scene is an exhilarating and unnerving development. To listen to her in action is to re-examine whatever assumptions you may have had about how well the piano can actually be played.”
REPERTOIRE:
Beethoven: Coriolan Overture, P. 62
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 Emperor
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36
